CANNES OPENING CEREMONY 2012 CELEBRATING FASHION LEGENDS
Last Wednesday, the fashionistas of the world feasted their eyes on the Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony. The legendary festival’s red carpet has seen some of the greatest fashion icons in history, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Catherine Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot, Princess Diana and Madonna. As such, celebrities are careful to mark the day on their calendars, working with renowned designers to prepare their outfits well in advance.
Admittedly, the opening ceremony sets the tone for the elegance to be observed during the course of the festival. This year, the highlight was Eva Longoria’s Marchesa gown, with an incredibly long tulle train. My favourite detail was the open-back of the gorgeously embroidered dress. Jane Fonda also wowed the public, in a glossy, tight Atelier Versace gown. Honestly, who could believe that the Hollywood legend is 74 years of age? As for Diane Kruger, she chose to display the recent spring trends, accessorising an aqua Giambattista Valli Couture gown with Boucheron diamond earrings. With the breeze blowing through her dress, the actress and model appeared to be literally flowing down the red carpet. Bathing in recent musical success, Lana Del Rey also kept it classy and simple, in a long, black Alberta Ferretti gown.
On the whole, this magical ceremony, which attracts film and fashion lovers from all around the world, represents the key opportunity for celebrities to enter the designer spotlight and make a name for themselves, along with the great Cannes fashion legends. Essentially, the aim of the soirée, for both actors and designers, is to have the paparazzi exclaim, for years to come, “Remember when she wore that dress at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival…Wow, that was truly amazing!”
