OLYMPICS FASHION - RALPH LAUREN DRAWS FOR TEAM USA
Who ever said athletes lack style obviously needs to attend this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games. After the infamous Stella McCartney presented her designs for Team Great Britain, another post-Royal Wedding coup de force, Ralph Lauren also decided to honour his country through fashion.
A few days ago, as the official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Team, Ralph Lauren made his sketches for the closing ceremony public. Keeping in line with the fashion house, the look aimed for is preppy, recalling traditional, upper-class American style. The outfits consist of a cotton sport t-shirt, paired with a knee-long skirt or pleated white trousers, each held up with a silk belt of red, white and blue stripes. The designer has also reported that a matching scarf will be tied at the neck. While we are still waiting for the much-anticipated opening ceremony ensembles, the drawings released already give us an idea of what to expect. To be sure, designing for a worldwide event, such as the Olympics, represents a tremendous opportunity for designers. As for us, it is interesting to observe the fashion ‘personalities’ of various countries.
If you feel drawn to Ralph Lauren’s preppy designs and wish to watch the Games in corresponding attire, I am pleased to inform that certain stores will sell pieces from the collection later this spring. If you can’t get a gold medal in sports, you can at least earn one in fashion!
